Shakespeare, the Apostle Paul, and the Golden Rule: A New Way of Managing Your Teen

Recent findings from the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development indicate that half of all America’s adolescents are at risk for such serious problems as substance abuse; early, unprotected sexual intercourse; dangerous accident-prone lifestyles; delinquent behavior; and dropping out of school. The same report concluded, “Today’s children are susceptible to a vortex of new risks almost unknown to their parents.”

From gunfire in the halls of our schools to disrespect among family members in our homes; drugs on the playground to painkillers from our medicine cabinets; offensive and violent lyrics in music to sexually explicit images in the movies we watch at home on a Saturday night—our children have access to it all. More than ever before, faithful parents are challenged to establish a realistic approach for purposeful, meaningful, grace-full living within their family. Parenting an adolescent is no longer a matter of, “What should we let them do, see, hear?” Teens today do, see, and hear it all. Now the more important question is, “Who do we help them become?”

In Shakespeare, the Apostle Paul, and the Golden Rule: A New Way of Managing Your Teen, Dr. Greg Sipes helps parents to better “see” how to relate to their teens and help them become all we hope they can be. By being realistic about the “way things are” in these fast-changing times and by being fearlessly honest with young people about the realities of our modern lives, we can have a more cooperative experience with our teens rather than one filled with anxiety, frustration, conflict, and strife.
